It’s hard to believe, but our classes are winding down for the school year. The kids will soon return home for the long holiday break with their families. They’ll return in early 2017, promoted to their next grades and ready for another year of learning.

One of the things we’ll be turning up the dial on next year is the area of field trips. Through field trip experiences, students get to see places they wouldn’t otherwise and learn about the world through hands-on experiences. In Kenya, especially in the rural communities where our kids live, a child can go through their entire school experience and never once have the opportunity to go on a field trip.

And not only are our kids going to be involved in more experiences outside the classroom, but you’re invited to join them! Not only will you get to spend time with our students and staff, you’ll also get to see Kenya through the eyes of our students.

These field trips will provide the framework for our summer short-term trips. We’re excited about the opportunity for our American Sponsors and supporters to engage in shared experiences with our students. Trip participants will choose from trips themed around things like the following:

  • Exports (coffee, tea, etc.)
  • Agriculture (fish, livestock, farming, etc.)
  • Art (sandstone sculptures, baskets, etc.)

These outside-the-classroom excursions will take place over the course of several days, giving students the chance to encounter several sites in one mega-sized field trip. In the evenings, they’ll have writing assignments that will help them process their experiences that day, expanding their views of the world, and helping them flex their problem-solving muscles as they think about any obstacles or challenges they note along the way.

Although it’s only fall, now is a great time to begin thinking about next summer. We’d love for you to consider a trip to Canopy Life for a first-hand encounter with our students and the world in which they live.
