Last week, our students learned the story of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32) in their Deep Roots Discipleship class. Not only did they hear the story—they also had the opportunity to act it out theatrically and even put it into action by finding unique ways to show love to each other. The timing of this lesson was perfect, as it was our final Deep Roots interactive before the students returned to their homes for the end-of-first-term break. We’re thrilled our students will have memorable depictions of God’s love for them as they spend time away from school this month.
One of our favorite stories from the week is when Class 5 decided to surprise Class 4 with a celebration upon their return from playing. As soon as Class 4 left the school grounds, Class 5 began scheming. They wanted their surprise to be just like the party the Father threw in the story. At Canopy Life, hand-washing socks is a daily personal task. While our students generally undertake this chore with cheerful spirits, it’s not a favorite thing. So Class 5 decided they would take it upon themselves to wash all of Class 4’s socks. They also baked them an apple pie. (Kudos to Teacher Pip for directing the pie baking, as apple pie is not a common treat in Kenya!)
When Class 4 returned, Class 5 rushed out to meet them with cheering and hugs. They met them while they were “still far away” and donned their fingers with glamorous rings they had crafted out of pipe cleaners. What a sweet reminder that God loves us no matter how far we stray.
“But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’” (Luke 15:22-25)
Class 4 loved their rings, and Class 5 loved making them for their younger brothers and sisters. These adorable rings remind us that our Father loves us no matter what.
As our students are home during break, please join us in praying for . . .
- a restful break for the staff and students.
- our students to connect in positive ways with their families and for their safety as they travel and are away from Canopy Life.
- Teacher Pip, as she is currently home in the US and raising additional support.
