We’ve had quite an exciting July at Canopy Life! As we welcomed a new team of visitors, we also dove into lessons about digital marketing and financial literacy. We also did some serious work in our counseling department as we worked on trauma healing. Check out the update below for what happened around campus in July!

HOMELIFE UPDATE

A big part of what we do at Canopy Life is provide counseling for our students. This not only helps navigate the ups and downs of life, but also helps to work through past trauma and experiences. This month, the Homelife Department has been focusing on healing those past traumas with our students. We’re happy to report that our students have been making positive progress on each of their own personal journeys. The students and staff are currently reading a book called, Healing Trauma. This book has aided in the progress we’ve seen as we continue with each student’s individual counseling.

This past month, we also had another U.S team visit campus! The students presented the visitors with beadwork bracelets with Swahili names that they gave to each visitor. It was a really special gift!

SPIRITUAL UPDATES FROM KENYA

The Spiritual Department has been dedicated to group mentorship for both our 7th and 8th grade students. We’re continuing to hold mentorship lessons and bible studies using the guide “Life in His Name” based on the book of John.

Our mentorship groups focused on important values such as, patience, courage, and integrity. Through the “Life in His Name” guide, we explored several studies, including: The Just Judge, Bread of Life, Light of the World, The Good Shepherd, and The Way, the Truth, and the Life. As of now we have completed this curriculum and we’re thrilled about the progress we have seen so far! We are now expecting to see these kids witness and share the word of God. Over the midterm break we received a report that Delight, Esther Kyalo and Zipporah did tremendously well in sharing the word in their communities. This brought us so much joy to hear!

ACADEMIC UPDATES

The Academic Department has been very busy with a variety of projects and activities for the students. Last month, we organized different sporting events for our students who play football and netball. Additionally, they receive training every Wednesday and Saturday by different coaches to better their skills. We are pleased with the results that we are witnessing. We believe this initiative is important, especially for students who would want to explore sports as a full-time career. For example, Enock and Alpha want to be what they term GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) Players, like Messi, Mbappe and Ronaldo. This initiative will offer them insight and guidance should they choose to explore football as a career post-graduation.

This month, we initiated an agricultural project! We’re planting sweet potatoes and other crops, as we continue teaching students about sustainable farming practices.

INNOVATION UPDATES

The 7th grade students have been fully engaged in exploring Digital Marketing as part of their curriculum. They dove into the world of online advertising, learning how to create eye-catching content and use social media to reach different audiences. From analyzing data, to understanding consumer behavior online – they’ve gained practical skills that they can apply to real-world marketing scenarios. Throughout the course, they’ve developed a keen sense of how digital tools can influence buying decisions and the ethical considerations involved.

Meanwhile, the 8th grade students have been immersed in learning about financial literacy. They are focusing on the skills needed to manage money wisely. They’ve covered everything from budgeting and saving, to understanding how taxes and deductions affect their earnings. The students have enjoyed calculating their net and gross pay, learning about deductions like PAYE (Pay As You Earn) and how it impacts their take-home income.

Both groups of students have shown great enthusiasm for their studies. They are actively participating in class discussions and demonstrating a clear understanding of the lessons. It’s been a pleasure to see them grow in these important areas! They’re gaining skills that will benefit them, not only in school, but also in their future careers and personal lives.

PRAYER REQUESTS

  • Pray for the students, staff, and their families as they break for the August break.

Will you give to our Building Brave Campaign?

Your gift, whether it’s $5 or $50,000, helps us expand our campus to double our student population and expand our high school offerings on-campus in time for our current 7th and 8th grade students to attend Canopy Life when they reach high school.
