In this reflection, Founder and Executive Director Christi Gordy shares a glimpse into a sacred leadership moment—one that captures the heart of Canopy Life’s mission: healing that leads to transformation, and transformation that flows back into communities.

There are moments in leadership when God gives you a glimpse of the bigger story. Rare, tender moments when you begin to see how His timing, His healing, and His purposes weave together across lives and generations. My recent conversation with Sheila was one of those moments.

A Leader Formed Within the Canopy Life Community

Sheila has been part of the Canopy Life family for years—first as an Innovation Intern, then as a teacher, and always as a bright thread in the tapestry of our community. Her laughter still echoes in my memory. Her joy fills rooms. Her ability to communicate, to ignite excitement, and to bring others along with her has made her a natural spokesperson for our mission. Whether she is speaking in our brand video or sharing our story with donors during the recent U.S. tour, she carries an energy that helps people believe transformation is possible.

So when she sat with me and shared that she felt called to return to Western Kenya for her field research in child protection, I felt the ache of loss. At the same time, there was a quiet clarity that this, too, was holy ground.

From Trauma to Healing: The Power of an Emotionally Healthy Environment

Sheila grew up in a region where children face unthinkable challenges. She experienced trauma herself. And yet, she walked into Canopy Life ready to pour herself out for others. Over time, through our counseling program and emotional wellness culture, she experienced her own healing. In her words, “I joined Canopy carrying traumas, but through Linah’s counseling and the emotionally healthy environment here, I’ve healed into a whole individual.”

What a miracle that is. Not just for Sheila, but for all of us who have prayed that our campus would become a place where beauty, belonging, and shalom take root.

I often say that the bravest people in this story are not our students. They are our staff. Our Kenyan teachers and leaders are rising from the very environments our students come from. They are building emotionally healthy, innovative, hope-filled spaces they themselves never had. They are choosing to become the healing they longed for as children.

Sheila is one of those brave ones.

Returning Home as an Agent of Transformation

Her master’s program is leading her home, to pursue research and create change for vulnerable children in the place that shaped her. As she spoke, I realized this is the very thing I continue to pray for our students. They will heal. They will become agents of transformation in Kenya. And they will carry hope back into the places that shaped their own stories.

What God is doing in Sheila mirrors the future we dream of for every child at Canopy Life.

Innovation and Vision at Atlanta Tech Village

One moment from our U.S. tour still plays in my mind. We were walking the halls of Atlanta Tech Village, surrounded by entrepreneurs and innovators. I watched Sheila’s eyes light up—truly light up—in a way that told me she was imagining possibilities. Ideas. Ventures. Future solutions. Something awakened in her that day. And I believe she will carry that spark into her work in Western Kenya.

Leadership, Obedience, and Generational Impact

As a founder, these are the moments that steady my heart. The work is slow. The stories are complex. The weight of leadership is real. And then God gives you a glimpse of a life transformed, and everything aligns. You see the generational impact unfolding before your eyes. You remember why obedience matters. You remember that healing is never meant to stop with us. It flows outward, back into our families, our communities, and our nations.

Releasing with Open Hands

Sheila is stepping away from her role to pursue her calling, and we release her with open hands, honoring what God is doing in her life. We don’t cling to people. We bless them into the future God is shaping. And though we sincerely hope our paths cross again after her year of research, we trust that whatever comes next is held in His faithfulness.

Sheila, your courage is a testimony. Your healing is a witness. Your calling is a gift. You have impacted our students, our staff, and me personally more than you know. And now you go as a light into a place that desperately needs hope.

May the God who restores all things go before you. May the seeds of healing planted in you grow into forests of transformation for generations to come. This is the work of the Kingdom. This is the beauty of generational restoration. And we are humbled to be part of your story.
