Last week, we told you a little bit about our student Grace and her Global Mentors Bishop and Cory Kick. The Kicks have been married a little over a year, and live in Ohio. Cory works at a bank and Bishop spends her days serving coffee and tea in a small shop near their home. They joined Grace’s Sponsor Family when Grace started at Canopy Life Academy, and have invested in her spiritual and academic growth this year.

Last week, Bishop sat down and answered a few questions about their experience. Read below to learn more about what it’s like to mentor one of Kenya’s future leaders.

Why did you decide to sponsor a Canopy Life student?

When Christi first began sharing the vision of Canopy Life, we knew we wanted to be a part. Empowering kids in Kenya to be unique and creative is a rare opportunity and we were excited to join a Sponsor Family!

Do you have a favorite moment or memory from a conversation with or letter from Grace

Although we loved our birthday cards from Grace, our favorite moment with Grace was when she was preparing to go home for a visit between terms. The kids had been practicing how to share the gospel with their families and neighbors. Grace asked us to pray that even if she messed up her words or was afraid, the Holy Spirit would still reach her families’ hearts. The moment was profound for us, especially when Pip shared the kids had not necessarily been taught that truth, but it was obvious God had planted that in her heart. [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][You can read more about this particular Skype call in last week’s blog post Student Highlight: Grace’s Story.]

What’s something about Canopy’s Child Sponsorship program that has surprised you?

We have been surprised and blessed by how strong our bond with Grace has grown through our Skype calls. She remembers what we talk about each month, and asks about the prayer requests we shared. We think she encourages us more than we could encourage her!

What are three words you would use to describe to a friend what it is like to sponsor Grace?

Encouraging
Worth it
Impactful

Is there anything not covered in these questions that you would want the world to know?

We think it’s precious that every month, Grace asks to see our cat. Stinkin’ love that kid!

Thank you so much to Bishop for sharing her and Cory’s story with us. We love our Global Mentors and Sponsors like Grace loves cats . . . except maybe with less vigor.
